AJ Wall Lamp
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Wall lamp in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen as part of his holistic vision for the building. The fixture provides a comfortable, downward-directed light through its white-painted inner shade, which can be tilted to fine-tune the direction of illumination.
The AJ lamp family—widely regarded as Jacobsen’s most internationally recognized design—also included a table lamp, a smaller table version, a floor lamp, and a table-mounted model. These designs were used throughout the hotel following its opening in 1960, reinforcing a cohesive aesthetic.
With its clean, distinctive form and precise light, the AJ lamp appeared across the hotel in finishes such as copper and stainless steel. Alongside the AJ Royal, it formed part of the unified design concept Jacobsen created, extending even to the building’s architecture. The lamp’s interplay of straight lines and curved angles mirrors the geometric language seen in his architectural work.
Light concept
The fixture emits downward directed light. The angle of the screen can be adjusted approximately 90 degrees up and down and 60 degrees to each side to optimize light distribution. The shade is painted white on the inside to ensure a soft comfortable light.
