PH 80 Floor Lamp
Poul Henningsen developed the three-shade system in 1925–1926 and, in collaboration with Louis Poulsen, created the first lamps based on it for an exhibition in Paris, beginning a partnership that lasted until his death in 1967; throughout his life, Henningsen aimed to produce direct, glare-free light with soft shadows, using incandescent bulbs and a scientific approach based on the logarithmic spiral to achieve an even distribution of light across the curved shades, which, combined with diffused reflection, allowed precise control of glare and shadow, as each shade reduces the light equally according to its distance from the source. The PH 80 is part of this three-shade family, reflecting a system that ultimately led to around a thousand variations, although unlike most PH models its name does not refer to the size of the top shade, but instead marks its origin as a commemorative design introduced in 1974 after Henningsen’s death to celebrate what would have been his 80th birthday; the original version features a distinctive red top reflector that creates warm, atmospheric light, paired with opal acrylic shades for soft, diffused illumination, while later versions in black and white reinterpret the design with more contemporary finishes, from the black edition’s contrasting matte structure and white reflector to the white version’s clean, monochrome expression, offering modern alternatives while maintaining the characteristic PH lighting quality.
Light concept
The fixture emits a diffused, reflected, symmetrical light. The majority of the light is directed downward. The opal acrylic shades provide comfortable room lighting. On the orginal fixture, the red hue of the top reflector adds an intense, warm glow to the light. The black and white fixtures have a white top reflector that reflects the light for a clean, elegant look. The choice of light source will determine the color of the illumination.
