PH 2/1 Wall Lamp
The PH 2/1 Wall Lamp is part of Poul Henningsen’s pioneering three-shade system, originally developed in 1925–1926 in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. This enduring partnership continued throughout Henningsen’s lifetime, shaping one of the most influential lighting systems in design history.
Guided by a scientific approach to light, Henningsen aimed to eliminate glare, direct illumination where it was most needed, and create soft, balanced shadows. By applying the principles of the logarithmic spiral, he achieved an even distribution of light across the shades, ensuring both visual comfort and functional precision.
The three-shade system evolved into a comprehensive family of designs, with around a thousand variations produced over time, including table, floor, wall, and pendant lamps, as well as chandeliers. The PH 2/1 Wall Lamp is one of the system’s “hybrid” models, featuring a top shade of approximately 20 cm combined with smaller lower shades from the 1/1 configuration—designed to offer greater flexibility in placement.
Crafted with layered opal glass shades, the lamp emits both downward-directed and ambient light, softly illuminating its surroundings. A timeless design, it reflects Henningsen’s legacy of combining scientific innovation with refined, atmospheric lighting.
Light concept
The fixture is designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. The shades are made of mouth-blown opal three-layer glass, which is shiny on the top and sandblasted matt on the inside, giving a soft and diffused light distribution.
