PH 5/5 Pendant
Poul Henningsen designed hundreds of lamps based on the three-shade system he developed in 1926, achieving a high level of even, glare-free lighting for a wide range of needs, and many of his designs include numbers that indicate the size and proportions of the shades; the PH 5/5 is a so-called “whole” model with a compact and rounded appearance, featuring a top shade of around 50 cm and lower shades following the 3:2:1 proportion, which makes it particularly glare-free and well suited for placement high in a room where it distributes soft, balanced light, while the more widely known hybrid models, such as the PH 3/2, combine different shade sizes and are intended to hang lower, often above a table, to provide more focused illumination and a warm atmosphere; these proportional differences influence both the quality of light and the visual expression, with whole models appearing more solid and cohesive and hybrid models lighter and more open, while Henningsen’s system also carefully considers materials such as opal glass and metal to control light and reduce glare, an approach further refined in 1929 through combinations like copper and glass, and which continues to make the PH 5/5 an elegant and functional lighting solution for both residential interiors and larger spaces with high ceilings.
Light concept
The fixture emits a diffused and comfortable glare-free light, characteristic of the reflective three-shade-system by Poul Henningsen. The fixture is available with white opal glass or soft touch black painted metal with a white inner side. Where the metal shades with the white painted inner sides reflect a fine and primarily downward directed light, the metal top shade combined with translucent opal glass middle and lower shades in three-layered mouth blow opal glass create a warm glow around the pendant too. The included diffuser in frosted glass is easy to insert for an even softer light distribution.
