PH 5 Opal

PH 5 Opal

Danish designer and architect Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) envisioned capturing the warmth of the golden hour through light. In 1958, he created the PH 5 in response to the changing shapes and sizes of incandescent bulbs, addressing the glare they could produce. The result was a versatile pendant that offered soft, balanced illumination, regardless of the bulb used.

Based on Henningsen’s iconic three-shade system, the PH 5 directs both downward and lateral light, illuminating the fixture itself and creating a rich, glare-free glow. Its distinctive form and considered use of colour have made it one of Louis Poulsen’s most celebrated designs.

A timeless lighting icon, the PH 5 brings warmth and understated elegance to dining rooms, kitchens, hallways and living spaces. Its carefully balanced proportions and characteristic light make it a defining piece of Scandinavian design, created to transcend time and place.

Light concept:

The fixture provides a comfortable, glare-free light, based on the principle of Poul Henningsen’s reflective three-shade system. It emits a lateral light as well as illuminating itself, providing a soft radiance from within its core. The opal shade fixtures combine the glare-free, downward-directed light with a soft, diffused, ambient illumination from the translucent opal shades that creates an omnidirectional, uniform brightness with a larger area coverage.
