PH Louvre
Poul Henningsen designed his first lamps in 1925–1926 for an exhibition in Paris, marking the beginning of a lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen that continued until his death in 1967.
Throughout his career, Henningsen focused on creating glare-free lighting that directed illumination precisely where needed while producing soft, comfortable shadows. Working with incandescent light sources, he developed a scientific approach to shaping and controlling light.
The PH Louvre was designed in 1957 for the Adventist Church. Its distinctive globe-shaped form is composed of 13 shades mounted on four supports, carefully arranged to ensure even, glare-free light distribution from all angles.
The design is a refined and simplified evolution of an earlier concept by Henningsen known as the Spiral, created in 1942. With the PH Louvre, this idea was distilled into a more structured and architectural form, maintaining its sculptural presence while enhancing its lighting performance.
Light concept
The fixture provides 100% glare-free light. The geometrical, spherical design is based on the principle of illuminating all surfaces at the same angle. This ensures uniform light around the fixture, illuminating both walls and ceiling. Matt painted undersurfaces and glossy top surfaces result in an attractive reflection of the diffused light, creating uniform light distribution around the fixture.
