PH Artichoke Glass
Poul Henningsen’s PH Artichoke Glass was introduced in 2008, but its origins can be traced back to earlier experiments with glass lighting designs. Between 1927 and 1931, Henningsen developed the PH Septima—a pendant composed of seven glass shades—which was produced by Louis Poulsen until 1940, when production ceased due to material shortages during the war.
When Henningsen was commissioned to design a lamp for the Langelinie Pavillonen in 1958, he was able to complete the project in just three months by building on the principles established in the Septima. This resulted in the iconic PH Artichoke, where the shades were reinterpreted as layered “leaves,” arranged in what Henningsen described as “picket fences,” and originally executed in copper.
The PH Artichoke Glass revisits this concept, drawing it closer in expression to the original Septima. Crafted from handmade, sandblasted glass, the lamp diffuses light gently through its layered structure, creating a soft and comfortable illumination. Whether switched on or off, the transparent, ice-like leaves lend a sense of lightness and elegance to the space.
Due to its complexity and craftsmanship, the PH Artichoke Glass requires a specialized installation process. After purchase, a dedicated agreement is arranged. The suspension system is delivered first and must be installed on site, after which a trained technician from Louis Poulsen completes the assembly of the glass leaves—ensuring precise installation, regardless of location.
Light concept
The fixture provides 100% glare-free light. The 72 precisely positioned leaves form 12 unique rows of six leaves each. They illuminate the fixture, as well as emit diffused light with a unique pattern. Reflection from the light source is diffused in the sandblasted lower surfaces, and this light is reflected decoratively in the top surfaces, giving the fixture a unique glow. The surface treatment on the glass leaves eliminates direct glare. For the energy saving LED variant the quality of light and atmosphere surrounding the product is kept at the highest level.
