AJ Floor Lamp

Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lamp in 1957 as part of the complete interior concept for the SAS Royal Hotel (opened in 1960). The floor lamp emits a pleasant, downward-directed light, enhanced by its white-painted inner shade, while the adjustable head allows for flexible light distribution.
The AJ lamp family—widely regarded as Jacobsen’s most iconic lighting design—includes a floor lamp, table lamps in different sizes, a wall lamp, and a table-mounted version. These fixtures were used throughout the hotel, reinforcing a cohesive visual identity.
Characterized by its clean, distinctive shape and precise light, the AJ lamp was originally produced in materials such as copper and stainless steel. Together with the AJ Royal pendant, it formed an integral part of Jacobsen’s holistic design approach, where he crafted nearly every element of the building. The lamp’s sharp lines and combination of straight and curved angles echo the geometric forms found in his architectural work.
 
Light concept
 
The fixture emits downward directed light. The angle of the screen can be adjusted approximately 90 degrees up and down to optimize light distribution. The shade is painted white on the inside to ensure a soft comfortable light.
